What gets me though is that as you say the best way to alleviate pressure is

to retain possession and at leats pose a bit of an attacking threat.

Not playing Wes does not alleviate pressure because we have less of an outball and the defenders have less options for a pass when they have the ball.

Taking off Murphy and replacing him with Bennett does not help us retain the ball it does precisely the opposite.

why can he not see this?
