I know most people wont be, but I'd be reasonably happy if the window shut now ....

I see it like this:

Worthington has asked for particular players, Jerome, Mcsheffrey etc. The board have responded by saying they're out of our reach at the moment, and we wont spend silly money.

I would however suspect it's more a case of this:
Worthy's asked fo those players, the board knowing they dont have to renew his contract in the Summer if they don't want have discussed the possibility of giving him very limited resources to the end of the season i.e. a couple of loan signings. If there is no improvement or at least some seeming level of consistency on the pitch reached before then, come the summer Worthy goes and the new man gets a few million.

I can imagine there's a bit of debate still amongst the board as to whether he should stay or go after all he did for us, and to appease those that want him to stay, namely Delia, they have reached an agreement to give him a few months, without jeopardising the ashton money.
