i Don't mean to sound like an uber-geek on this one...

...but apparently 'aluminum' is the orignal spelling that Humphrey Davy gave.

Us brits decided we didn't like the original spelling as it didn't fit the pattern of ending with '-ium', which is the case for the majority of elements discovered around that time. E.g. Sodium, Potassium, Calcium etc...
