Stone had no way of knowing what Balls was going to say, so this way he had time to let Balls show his hand first and then Stone was better able to deal with the matter.

Voicemails can be very useful for gaining free info and prep time, I don't think that necessarily would make him lacking "steel" as the article suggested. He may well be a weak candidate for the perm role (I wasn't at the dinner, so can't comment)
