Just say we want a 7 day service for capacity reasons. Anyone who has had the misfortune to be in hospital over the weekend will know that there are people stuck there for longer than they would be if they'd been admitted midweek due to lack of doctors/consultants/other support. Waste of bed space. And spreading routine ops over 7 days will free up capacity midweek.
Just pony up the cash in salaries (bet they don't dick about with the consultant contract ndgotiations) and accept that a 7 day service will cost more than a 5 day service. It will still be cheaper than building new hospitals.
