Makes me think of Fernando Derveld a little bit

Derveld talked a good game and was rock solid.

Except for one mistake. Which led to a goal. Every. Single. Game. He. Played.

Bassong is clearly much better than FD could ever dream of being. If he could concentrate and think for 90 minutes he'd be very good. Evidence suggests that he can't really, though.
