A close family friend of ours worked for South Yorkshire Police. Not at the time of everything happening but a couple of his colleagues were involved at Hillsborough (on a junior level at the time).
In recent years when the inquiry started, these two policemen were called into an interview with a senior government official and explicitly told to change their statements that they made at the time. The original statements contained details about behaviour and the state of intoxicication of a number of fans that they saw and encountered. This was something that was cause for concern with the enquiry. They were told if they didn't then their current positions would be 're-assessed'.
One of which refused, the other was given a new statement to sign off. The guy who refused was relieved of his duties shortly after whilst the other guy was moved to a slightly more comfortable role.
This is absolutely true, 100%. I can't go into anything else obviously as it's pretty serious, but believe me, it's happened. If it's happening on one side then I bet it's been happening on the other.
