Palma as a base then................ .

Do the old train ride from Palma and the cathedral in Palma. There is also a tourist double decker bus tour well worth doing to see around the city.

Take the Mrs out at night to Abaco in Palma. It is cool just to have a look around and a cocktail.

Stay to the west of the city around the Porto Pi area. There are some shops and a good supermarket in the basement that sells fab Tumbet (a traditional local food). Becchio goes to a restaurant there.... but don't let that put you off ;)

There is also a lovely beach near there at Cala Mayor that few tourists know about.

You can also buses from there to water-parks etc.

You could do all that without needing to hire a car.

Once there, see how it goes and then you can always decide to hire a car as and when required to see around the rest of the island.

Other than Majorca... consider Valencia.

Valencia is brill, lots to do, great value, and very easy to get around. You definitely wouldn't need a car there.
