He didn't take excessive risks to almost bring down the entire economy

He gets paid over a (longer) period of time based on certain targets which he met in terms of improving safety standards etc.

He did however oversee BP making losses in the latest financial period and he also gets paid extortionate amounts compared to most workers for BP and elsewhere, that's what the fuss is about, and it's understandable. The inequality between the rich and poor is a problem, always has been to be fair.
