"Date fillum" - Silver Linings Playbook. Fantastic, and has Jennifer Lawrence in it as well.
"Family fillum" - Little Miss Sunshine (it's darkly funny - much better than you think it's going to be).
"Epic" - I love Cloud Atlas right off but I've read the book and that really helps. It's intelligent and complex.
"Action" - The Dark Knight is the best by some distance of the recent spate of batman/avengers/superman/spiderman/etc type films; or Total Recall
Assume you've already seen things like Shawshank Redemption (if not, see it!), Matrix (don't bother with the sequels, they're so badly written), Inception, Goodfellas, Trainspotting, Enigma, Schindlers List, Withnail and I and so on.
Black Swan is really very good and you might not have seen it.
Brazil is one of my favourite films ever, and Twelve Monkeys is also very good - both are a bit older so might fit your bill. Or a Hitchcock?
Any Human Heart is a four-parter so not really a film but epic, brilliantly written and acted.
I've missed out so many but I'll be here all night if I don't stop and post now.
