At the start of the season, you know Fleming might need replacing for next season, or Ashton might go, so you go out and look for those positions from the word go, and have players ready for the inevitable.

And also plan for contingencies.

i.e. scout around for players we might need if we get promoted a year in advance. We clearly did nothing of the sort when we went up. Rush signings galore.
