You know what I like about this? Finally a hack gets it right and says "...alongside countryman Rafael van der Vaart..."
rather than, as every other pundit, including on the beeb, always says, "fellow countryman".
Either someone is a countryman (ie from the same country as you), or a "fellow Dutchman" or "fellow Englishman" or whatever.
"Fellow countryman", despite apparently being the compulsory term, makes no sense. In this instance it would imply that Ricky is a countryman, all on his own, and Rafa is also one, and so is a fellow one. Makes no sense.
So well done whoever at Archant wrote that.
Rant over. Back to my OCD.
