I think he was expected to do well earlier on in his career

but he had some difficult personal issues to deal with (family related, think he may have lost a child and/on had an illness etc) which would naturally impact on anyone to do their job to the best of their ability.

I imagine the Dorrans family are settling into the area well now though and he can start to show his potential again, especially working for someone like Neil.
