Absolutely, yes. That's the 'A' - asynchronous.

But a half-meg upstream rate isn't slow enough to limit a 6, 7, 8 Meg downstream capability. I don't know how fast a rate your downstream would have to be capable of for it to be limited by a copper-wire upstream connection.
