Yes they do and they're a bit mad

UKIP are homophobic, racist, sexist and they probably hate hamsters too. But that's not why people vote for them. They like the "sod the lot" meme. Mainstream politicians need to engage much better with ordinary people, in particular working class people (inasmuch as that concept still has meaning), and make people feel their concerns are understood. Saying "no we're better than you and if you don't understand you're stupid" - which none of the mainstream parties have consciously done, but all have been perceived as doing - is daft.

Frank Luntz said "it's not what you say that counts, it's what people hear". He was right.
