in my 40-odd years following City this type of appointment is the norm:
Internal (cheap) appointments:
Brown
Stringer
Walker
Deehan
Megson
Hamilton
Worthington
Gunn
Adams
External appointments:
Bond
O'Neill
Rioch
Grant
Roeder
Lambert
Hughton
The external appouintments don't generally seem to have been more successful (unless you need a complete transformation of the club, in which case the Bond and Lambert appointments were key). Hard to say where the transformation/continuity index stands at the moment - obviously last season was terrible but in general recent years have been good for the club so a total teardown probably isn't really necessary...
