ref the otgher policies - I doubt 90% of UKIP voters know what those are

People are voting UKIP for three main reasons:

1) The three main parties are almost totally disconnected with the thoughts and desires of the average voter. Westminster doesn't seem to be that bothered about listening to the views of Joe Public anymore.

2) Lots of people believe that the EU is of no benefit to them.

3) Lots of people are worried about immigration and the effect it has on their jobs, their communities, and their children's future.

Unless and until the three main parties address each of these points, UKIP will continue to generate momentum and success. Heck, they could even afford to ignore the 2nd point as UKIP got nowhere back in the day when that was their primary message.
