spookily when he is up against teams worse than him (SPL) he plays attacking football and when up against better teams (Champions League) he plays defensive football.

Like, I suspect, most managers (especially when, as in this case, the contrast is so great - Celtic are generally considerably stronger than their SPL opponents and considerably weaker than their Champions League ones)
