do Wrathers clean their BBQ grills before use?

I do, but a mate of mine says he doesn't bother and he never has since being stationed in Cyprus in the 70s.
He reckons the Cyriots at the kebab shacks literally used to put them on the floor after cooking and the ants would eat any foodstuffs left on them and then when they put the grills back on the charcoal the intense heat would kill off any germs / bugs!
