It's a recognised form of argument

"reductio ad absurdum" - "to demonstrate that a statement is false by showing that a false, untenable, or absurd result follows from its acceptance". The arguments applied in favour of MacKay can equally be applied to Megson - yet we all agree he would be an absurd choice.
