It works very well in some cases. In Fergie's last few years at Man U apparently he was effectively Director of Football while Phelan took care of most of the actual coaching. I think a lot of it comes down to PR and how it is sold - of course if it's clear that the first team coach is just a puppet, or if they're both pulling in different directions, then it's probably not going to work out. But I certainly think it's worth looking at, provided we can find the right team.
