I think there's a bit of confusion here. The problem with Hughton wasn't tactical formations, long vs short ball etc. It was the conservative, unambitious approach (hence the miserly number of goals we always scored under him, both seasons).
People keep seeing MM would be "Hughton Mk II", but then start grumbling about hoofball etc. As if that was the problem under Hoots. I don't think it was, particularly.)
