we were set up defensively last season

I think we were so defensive last season (and we generally were, let's face it) that Hughton was already characterised as being negative going into this season (almost like a mantra in some cases) to a degree that people saw events this season through that predetermined view of things even in the face of the evidence of what was actually happening.
Ironically most of Hughton's worst tactical blunders this season actually involve being frankly too ambitious (Fulham, Newcastle at home, Swansea away spring to mind)
