Tactics are overemphasised in football

Including by me.

At the end if the day it's down to players doing their jobs. You can have the crappiest tactics in the world but if the players pass to their teammates accurately and stick the ball in the net when the chance arises you'll still win. Conversely you can have a tactical master plan of utter genius but if your players don't pass, shoot or tackle properly you'll lose and look like a t**t.

Chelsea hit the inside of the woodwork twice yesterday. Those few inches are the difference between 0-0 and being described as a tactical genius and losing 2-0 and going down without a fight.
This isn't a criticism of Adams - it is true of all managers everywhere when they do well or badly. They are judged on results when more than half of the factors affecting the result are outside their control. Managers get some things right and some things wrong (not necessarily in equal proportions!) but looking simply at results isn't a very accurate way to judge them.
We played much better in the losses at Cardiff and West Ham, for example, than we did st West Brom where we won.
