Control of the ball is irrelevant re the foul

Most free kicks given for late challenges are when the ball has already gone.

Can see why it wouldn't be a red card as no goalscoring opportunity but if you're clattered off the ball it's a foul. Doesn't require any interpretation, not discretionary, it's a foul
