I don't get the "100% effort/always put in shift" attitude towards him

Ok, cards on the table: I've always thought he is rather overrated by a lot of people and I hate his penchant for diving/feigning injury and whinging at refs.

But I often see a player who loses possession up the pitch and then just stands there and makes no effort to track back and win the ball back. He gets away with it as he hides behind the trusted old formula of pointing and shouting a lot.
