Really, it's quite simple. He knows Whittaker is behind him, but when he looks up and nobody is in the box he doesn't see Whittaker run into the box behind the Fulham player. So, when he knocks it back to Whittaker he unfortunately is no longer there. Looks terrible. But, he is a decent player. Support the lad.
