That was proved when all day drinking came in.

People used to go out for a few pints at lunch time, go somewhere else. probably to eat and then go out again in the evening. Now, they just stay in the boozer and drink from 11 in the morning till 11 at night non stop.
And the issue of finite money isn't true either as most pubs now take cards .
