I would take the opposite perspective

Football is the probably only the fifth most popular team sport in America, yet there are quite a few players earning over $1 million. That's quite remarkable if you ask me. I've no idea what the fifth most popular team sport is in the UK, but whatever it is, I don't suppose the salaries are anything near that level.
