something as small as a split second where a shot hits the inside the post when a couple of centimeters the other way it would have gone in can make 2 points difference. I thought I read somewhere that if shots that hit the woodwork had gone in we'd have come one from bottom last season.
As an example if Holt had scored that penalty against Saints we'd be virtually safe now - over a (seemingly eternal) 9 month period that one split second event can make such a huge difference...
A 9 point difference is a lot in its practical effect but the margins giving rise to it are very very fine.
