I'm really unenthusiastic about sacking him

I hate the idea of returning to the bad old days of a new manager every 18 months, with all the associated cost and disruption (new assistant managers, new coaches, new everyone, new players blah blah).

I wouldn't really want to sack him if we went down. If we stay up then he should have all next season (unless, I suppose, we're bottom in December).
