Perhaps the board might like to consider why rumours spread. Typically they occurr when there is a lack of disclosure. They are generated when people need to explain situations when official news is absent, and people feel disenfranchised and powerless. Its mentally easier to spread rumours if you don't feel responsibility through association.
Defending your manager is fine. Patronising "we know best" claptrap instead of a real debate about whats going on on the pitch, isn't.
