There's a difference between jokes about Holt being a kabbadi player, or Worthy believing that Charlton is a midfield playmaker, and "jokes" about two people being in a covert gay relationship.

The first is classed in law as "mere vulgar abuse". The second is actionable defamation and can get you, and the publisher of the libel, sued.
