Your position is overly simplistic

Too many different variables and scenarios to say it is never justified/defensible. I don't think the current law is too far wrong provided it is applied sensibly.

I would agree however that it is not "reasonable force" to shoot someone in the back as they are leaving your property. That crosses the line between using reasonable force to defend yourself and dishing out your own punishment.
