It ain't that

it's kind of hard to explain: you'd have to be looking through these things. They showed me a couple of shots showing where the "soft focus" occurs, and how you get less "soft focus" areas if you pay more. I asked why the blurring, and was told "it's the way they're made". I asked, "why?". They couldn't answer why there has to be any blurring at all.

Tell you what, try this: take off your specs, and cover everything except the dead centre of the lens with a thin layer of margarine. Put them back on. Bingo! You are enjoying the varifocal experience.
