Were a very good idea when players of all sports, who have short careers, earned only a little more than the average man on the street. It helped tide them over before sorting themselves out with a new career (or buying a pub which was the usual option).

Testimonials for multi-millionaires (all premiership players) are a bit of a sick joke.
