This is what David James said on the BBC website

regarding Hodgson's appointment:-

"There's a long-term goal with a long-term contract. Hodgson is heavily statistics and performance based with regard to selection. He's dropped supposed stars when they haven't performed as his stats would suggest."

Presumably such stats don't apply to strikers?!
