and his age must count against him big time

not going to be a factor for the next World Cup so basivcally you'd be picking someone completely untried at international level for a single 1 month tournament. Both Holt & Carroll would be big gambles but at least Carroll has the possibility of provinding you with an option for years to come if he does well. Even if Holt does well you're basically in a position of having to start again almost immediately after the tournament.
