If you're having a look at them, I would advise

to look at the Samsung Galaxy S range (not Galaxy mini or that stuff).

Cos I know you are Apple-phobic, and the Galaxy S range are just about the only smartphones other than the iPhone which seem to have a decent life-time and user experience. And the Galaxy handsets tend to fall quicker in price too.

The Samsung Galaxy S III handsets will be unveiled shortly, which will probably mean you can pick up Galaxy S II handsets quite cheaply. And regarding handsets, refurbished is OK, but avoid second hand which are NOT refurbished.

Avoid Windows Phone handsets for the moment. I quite like Windows Phone, but word on the street is that the current handsets will not support WIndows Phone 8 which is released later this year. So that means your handset will be out of date with sod all apps available within just a few months of buying it. If you wait long enough, Windows 8 phones will probably be quite nice and simple, and decently priced.
