It's a bit Steve Davis, I think.

Back in the day, when snooker was popular, and Davis was interminably world champion, nobody (by which I mean me) liked him or wanted him to win.

Years later, once he and snooker had faded from view, I see him playing again and to my surprise find myself looking back with fondness at his golden era and wanting him to win again.
