What confuses me though, is that even after showing the red card for the foul, if the referee wanted to do something about the ball throwing incident he should have shown him a 2nd red card.

I think people believe you can only get 1 red card in a match, but you can get more. Dean Windass was shown 3 reds in 1 match when he was playing for Aberdeen.
