Flat screen advice required

my mother in law has offered to buy me a flat screen for crimbo. happy days. We are looking to spend around 500 - 600 quid but I dont know where to start.

I know I should get '1080p' (maybe!) but after that I am stuck.

has anyone got any advice?

Also, can I plug my laptop into it and all that jazz?
