to the pub after phoning in that your journey is disrupted and you're trying desperately to get in as you have "such and such" to do but it is looking less likely that you'll get back by the minute.

Then call back before you've had two pints and your voice is a little slurry saying you're still stuck, bnut hope to be in tomorrow.
