That comment about being dead and just for tourists - that's why I suggested that

Tony Martin look for one of the hidden away squares. They are extremely alive. Fish markets, kids playing while their parents watch from the window (no cars of course), etc.

If you stay near the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco then of course it is dead and touristy.
