At about 5pm on Saturday Ed Balls was heard shouting "It's a horrible result. It's a terrible result" into his mobile phone in the Labour conference.

Someone immediately whispered it was unwise to be so indiscreet about the just-announced Labour leadership contest in which he came third.

Balls was however only reacting to the two nil defeat by Hull
