there are two types of gypsies in the UK - completely different and separate. Romanies, and Irish travellers

Romanies clearly are an ethnic group - Irish travellers harder to define (how long does a close-knit community have to stay separate before you define them as that?)
More to the point though, defining either group as a 'human sub-species' - and the stuff that goes with that - is unsavoury stuff.
