Gunny

This morning, I started to ask myself a few questions. They were along the lines of why wouldn't we think of appointing Gunny, at least until the end of the season?

What he's got going for him. He's articulate, bright, media savvy and he's got character by the bucket load. He's even got the odd UEFA badge - which I didn't know. He understands this football club inside out and back to front. He finds it easy to talk to people and he's always up for doing something that puts the club in a good light. He's got great community connections and everybody thinks he's a legend.

Against him is that he's got no experience and he could be seen as a cheap and uninspired option.

All this was before the game. At the end of the first half my thought was that we'd played a bit better but still didn't look like scoring although we didn't look like losing either. There were some better performances although I was surprised to see Russell and Fotheringham in the team and had expected Lappin to at least be in the 16.

Second half the team finds it feet and it's goodnight Barnsley. The team's playing with freedom and flair and Gunny seems to have instilled a sense of togetherness we haven't seen for some time. The drwabridge doesn't come up just because we're 1-0 up and we go and gub them big style.

What could anyone else have done? What if we appoint someone else and we scrape a 1-1 draw v Southampton. The new manager will hear "We want Gunny" loud and clear.

We should not get carried away by one result and I hope I'm not. But given the man's obvious qualities as listed above, why on earth would you not give him the chance to take it on from here? It's obviously a risk, but so is the appointment of anyone on the radar at present. Also, he'll know who our targets are for this window as being Head of Recruitment and all that and be able to get on with it with speed and alacrity.

He IS the man for the job
