I like that he wanted a crack at management and where others

of similar stature/reputation might've hawked their pearlies at the Prem, he took on the club that was adrift at the bottom of the league - and kept them up.

That looks like common sense, to me - a sign that he wished to learn his trade. Of course it might also be that he lived nearby and might be quickly forgiven if he failed to keep a no-hope club in the league, I don't know.

But new managers do need to learn the game and few are given as much time to do so as Southgate. Ince might've improved at Ewood, who knows?
