Where were Watford when he took over though?

In their customary position as a struggling Champ/looking over their shoulders at League 1 club. That's how big Watford really are. They certainly weren't dreaming of a miraculous promotion based on monumental overachievement. Boothroyd did great there for getting on towards 3 years; then it went pear shaped in his final 9 months or so. He's still a good manager, knows the club well and is perfectly suited to digging us out of a relegation scrap.
