But I now drive a much faster car!

One thing that comes to mind is 'city' mode (aka 'girlie mode') this made the power steering extra powered to make turning the wheel easier during parking, never used it intentionally but would sometimes knock the button on which made it feel like the steering wheel had disengaged!
